Strolling at sunset in my native landA
With fruits and flowers thick on either handA
I crossed a Shadow flung athwart my wayB
Emerging on a waste of rock and sandA
-
'The apples all are gone from here ' I saidC
'The roses perished and their spirits fledC
I will go back ' A voice cried out 'The manD
Is risen who eternally was dead '-
-
I turned and saw an angel standing thereE
Newly descended from the heights of airE
Sweet eyed compassion filled his face his handsF
A naked sword and golden trumpet bareE
-
'Nay 'twas not death the shadow that I crossed '-
I said 'Its chill was but a touch of frostG
It made me gasp but quickly I came throughH
With breath recovered ere it scarce was lost '-
-
'Twas the same land Remembered mountains thrustI
Grayed heads asky and every dragging gustI
In ashen valleys where my sons had reapedJ
Stirred in familiar river beds the dustI
-
Some heights where once the traveler was shownK
The youngest and the proudest city knownK
Lifted smooth ridges in the steely lightL
Bleak desolate acclivities of stoneK
-
Where I had worshiped at my father's tombM
Within a massive temple's awful gloomM
A jackal slunk along the naked rockN
Affrighted by some prescience of doomM
-
Man's vestiges were nowhere to be foundO
Save one brass mausoleum on a moundO
I knew it well spared by the artist TimeP
To emphasize the desolation roundO
-
Into the stagnant sea the sullen sunQ
Sank behind bars of crimson one by oneQ
'Eternity's at hand ' I cried aloudR
'Eternity ' the angel said 'is doneQ
-
For man is ages dead in every zoneK
The angels all are dead but I aloneK
The devils too are cold enough at lastS
And God lies dead before the great white throneK
-
'Tis foreordained that I bestride the shoreT
When all are gone as Gabriel did beforeT
When I had throttled the last man aliveU
And swear Eternity shall be no more '-
-
'O Azrael O Prince of Death declareE
Why conquered I the grave ' I cried 'What rareE
Conspicuous virtues won this boon for me '-
'You've been revived ' he said 'to hear me swear '-
-
'Then let me creep again beneath the grassV
And knock thou at yon pompous tomb of brassV
If ears are what you want Charles Crocker's thereE
Betwixt the greatest ears the greatest ass '-
-
He rapped and while the hollow echoes rangW
Out at the door a curst hyena sprangW
And fled Said Azrael 'His soul's escaped '-
And closed the brazen portal with a bangW
