To him in whom the love of Nature has	A
Imperfectly supplanted the desire	B
And dread necessity of food your shore	C
Fair Oakland is a terror Over all	D

With dead dogs studded bears its ailing fleet	G
Broods the still menace of starvation Bones	H
Of men and women bleach along the ways	I
And pampered vultures sleep upon the trees	J
It is a land of death and Famine there	K
Holds sovereignty though some there be her sway	L
Who challenge and intrenched in larders live	M
Drawing their sustentation from abroad	N
But woe to him the stranger He shall die	O
As die the early righteous in the bud	P
And promise of their prime He venturesome	Q
To penetrate the wilds rectangular	B
Of grass grown ways luxuriant of blooms	R
Frequented of the bee and of the blithe	S
Bold squirrel strays with heedless feet afar	T
From human habitation and is lost	U
In mid Broadway There hunger seizes him	V
And careless man deeming God's providence	W
Extends so far he has not wherewithal	D
To bate its urgency Then lo appears	X
A mealery a restaurant a place	Y
Where poison battles famine and the two	Z
Like fish hawks warring in the upper sky	O
For that which one has taken from the deep	A2
Manage between them to dispatch the prey	L
He enters and leaves hope behind There ends	B2
His history Anon his bones clean picked	C2
By buzzards with the bones himself had picked	C2
Incautious line the highway O my friends	B2
Of all felonious and deadlywise	B2
Devices of the Enemy of Souls	B2
Planted along the ways of life to snare	K
Man's mortal and immortal part alike	D2
The Oakland restaurant is chief It lives	B2
That man may die It flourishes that life	E2

On human hearts and hopes I've seen in it	F2
Crabs stewed in milk and salad offered up	G2
With dressing so unholily compound	H2
That it included flour and sugar Yea	L
I've eaten dog there dog as I'm a man	E
Dog seethed in sewage of the town No more	C
Thy hand Dyspepsia assumes the pen	E
And scrawls a tortured 'Finis' on the page	I2
