To him in whom the love of Nature hasA
Imperfectly supplanted the desireB
And dread necessity of food your shoreC
Fair Oakland is a terror Over allD
Your sunny level from TamaletownE
To where the Pestuary's fragrant slimeF
With dead dogs studded bears its ailing fleetG
Broods the still menace of starvation BonesH
Of men and women bleach along the waysI
And pampered vultures sleep upon the treesJ
It is a land of death and Famine thereK
Holds sovereignty though some there be her swayL
Who challenge and intrenched in larders liveM
Drawing their sustentation from abroadN
But woe to him the stranger He shall dieO
As die the early righteous in the budP
And promise of their prime He venturesomeQ
To penetrate the wilds rectangularB
Of grass grown ways luxuriant of bloomsR
Frequented of the bee and of the blitheS
Bold squirrel strays with heedless feet afarT
From human habitation and is lostU
In mid Broadway There hunger seizes himV
And careless man deeming God's providenceW
Extends so far he has not wherewithalD
To bate its urgency Then lo appearsX
A mealery a restaurant a placeY
Where poison battles famine and the twoZ
Like fish hawks warring in the upper skyO
For that which one has taken from the deepA2
Manage between them to dispatch the preyL
He enters and leaves hope behind There endsB2
His history Anon his bones clean pickedC2
By buzzards with the bones himself had pickedC2
Incautious line the highway O my friendsB2
Of all felonious and deadlywiseB2
Devices of the Enemy of SoulsB2
Planted along the ways of life to snareK
Man's mortal and immortal part alikeD2
The Oakland restaurant is chief It livesB2
That man may die It flourishes that lifeE2
May wither Its foundation stones reposeB2
On human hearts and hopes I've seen in itF2
Crabs stewed in milk and salad offered upG2
With dressing so unholily compoundH2
That it included flour and sugar YeaL
I've eaten dog there dog as I'm a manE
Dog seethed in sewage of the town No moreC
Thy hand Dyspepsia assumes the penE
And scrawls a tortured 'Finis' on the pageI2
