Fallen Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAA CDDCC

O hadst thou died when thou wert greatA
When at thy feet a nation kneltB
To sob the gratitude it feltB
And thank the Saviour of the StateA
Gods might have envied thee thy fateA
-
Then was the laurel round thy browC
And friend and foe spoke praise of theeD
While all our hearts sang victoryD
Alas thou art too base to bowC
To hide the shame that brands it nowC
