Emancipation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFFGGH IIJJKL M NNOOP Q

Behold the days of miracle at lastA
Return if ever they were truly pastA
From sinful creditors' unholy greedB
The church called Calvary at last is freedB
So called for there the Savior's crucifiedC
Roberts and Carmany on either sideC
-
The circling contribution box no moreD
Provokes the nod and simulated snoreD
No more the Lottery no more the FairE
Lure the reluctant dollar from its lairE
Nor Ladies' Lunches at a bit a biteF
Destroy the health yet spare the appetiteF
While thrifty sisters o'er the cauldron stoopG
To serve their God with zeal their friends with soupG
And all the brethren mendicate the earthH
With viewless placards 'We've been so from birth '-
-
Sure of his wage the pastor now can lendI
His whole attention to his latter endI
Remarking with a martyr's prescient thrillJ
The Hemp maturing on the cheerless HillJ
The holy brethren lifting pious palmsK
Pour out their gratitude in prayer and psalmsL
Chant De Profundis meaning 'out of debt '-
And dance like mad or would if they were letM
-
Deeply disguised a deacon newly deadN
Supplied the means Jack Satan holds his headN
As high as any and as loudly singsO
His jubilate till each rafter ringsO
'Rejoice ye ever faithful ' bellows heP
'The debt is lifted and the temple free '-
Then says aside with gentle cachinationQ
'I've got a mortgage on the congregation '-
