Election Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBAAAAAACCAADDEE FFGGHIJJ KKLLAA DD

Despots effete upon tottering thronesA
Unsteadily poised upon dead men's bonesA
Walk up walk up the circus is freeB
And this wonderful spectacle you shall seeB
Millions of voters who mostly are foolsA
Demagogues' dupes and candidates' toolsA
Armies of uniformed mountebanksA
And braying disciples of brainless cranksA
Many a week they've bellowed like beevesA
Bitterly blackguarding lying like thievesA
Libeling freely the quick and the deadC
And painting the New Jerusalem redC
Tyrants monarchical emperors kingsA
Princes and nobles and all such thingsA
Noblemen gentlemen step this wayD
There's nothing the Devil excepted to payD
And the freaks and curios here to be seenE
Are very uncommonly grand and sereneE
-
No more with vivacity they debateF
Nor cheerfully crack the illogical pateF
No longer the dull understanding to aidG
The stomach accepts the instructive bladeG
Nor the stubborn heart learns what is whatH
From a revelation of rabbit shotI
And vilification's flames beholdJ
Burn with a bickering faint and coldJ
-
Magnificent spectacle every tongueK
Suddenly civil that yesterday rungK
Like a clapper beating a brazen bellL
Each fair reputation's eternal knellL
Hands no longer delivering blowsA
And noses for counting arrayed in rowsA
-
Walk up gentlemen nothing to payD
The Devil goes back to Hell to dayD
