Within my dark and narrow bedA
I rested well new laidB
I heard above my fleshless headA
The grinding of a spadeB
-
A gruffer note ensued and grewC
To harsh and harsher strainsD
The poet Welcker then I knewC
Was 'snatching' my remainsD
-
'O Welcker let your hand be stayedB
And leave me here in peaceE
Of your revenge you should have madeB
An end with my decease '-
-
'Hush Mouldyshanks and hear my moanF
I once as you're awareG
Was eminent in letters knownF
And honored everywhereG
-
'My splendor made all Berkeley brightH
And Sacramento blindI
Men swore no writer e'er could writeH
Like me if I'd a mindI
-
'With honors all insatiateI
With curst ambition smitI
Too far alas I tempted fateI
I published what I'd writI
-
'Good Heaven with what a hunger wildI
Oblivion swallows fameJ
Men who have known me from a childI
Forget my very nameJ
-
'Even creditors with searching looksK
My face cannot recallL
My heaviest one he prints my booksK
Oblivious most of allL
-
'O I should feel a sweet contentI
If one poor dun his claimJ
Would bring to me for settlementI
And bully me by nameJ
-
'My dog is at my gate forlornM
It howls through all the nightI
And when I greet it in the mornM
It answers with a bite '-
-
'O Poet what in Satan's nameJ
To me's all this adoI
Will snatching me restore the fameJ
That printing snatched from you '-
-
'Peace dread Remains I'm not aboutI
To do a deed of sinN
I come not here to hale you outI
I'm trying to get in '-
