What 'Out of danger ' Can the slighted DameA
Or canting Pharisee no more defameA
Will Treachery caress my hand no moreB
Nor Hatred lie alurk about my doorB
Ingratitude with benefits dismissedC
Not understanding what 'tis all aboutD
Will Envy henceforth not retaliateE
For virtues it were vain to emulateE
Will Ignorance my knowledge fail to scoutD
Not understanding what 'tis all aboutD
Yet feeling in its light so mean and smallF
That all his little soul is turned to gallF

What 'Out of danger ' Jealousy disarmedG
Greed from exaction magically charmedG
Ambition stayed from trampling whom it meetsH
Like horses fugitive in crowded streetsH
The Bigot with his candle book and bellI
Tongue tied unlunged and paralyzed as wellI
The Critic righteously to justice haledG
His own ear to the post securely nailedG
What most he dreads unable to inflictG
And powerless to hawk the faults he's pickedG
The Liar choked upon his choicest lieJ
And impotent alike to vilifyJ
Or flatter for the gold of thrifty menK
Who hate his person but employ his penK
Who love and loathe respectively the dirtG
Belonging to his character and shirtG
-
-
What 'Out of danger ' Nature's minions allF
Like hounds returning to the huntsman's callF
Obedient to the unwelcome noteG
That stays them from the quarry's bursting throatG
Famine and Pestilence and Earthquake direL
Torrent and Tempest Lightning Frost and FireM
The soulless Tiger and the mindless SnakeN
The noxious Insect from the stagnant lakeN
These from their immemorial prey restrainedG
Their fury baffled and their power chainedG
I'm safe Is that what the physician saidG
What 'Out of danger ' Then by Heaven I'm deadG
