Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBACC DEDEEDF GD HDBI JKJKKJII

Sleep fell upon my senses and I dreamedA
Long years had circled since my life had fledB
The world was different and all things seemedA
Remote and strange like noises to the deadB
And one great Voice there was and something saidB
'Posterity is speaking rightly deemedA
Infallible ' and so I gave attentionC
Hoping Posterity my name would mentionC
-
'Illustrious Spirit ' said the Voice 'appearD
While we confirm eternally thy fameE
Before our dread tribunal answer hereD
Why do no statues celebrate thy nameE
No monuments thy services proclaimE
Why did not thy contemporaries rearD
To thee some schoolhouse or memorial collegeF
It looks almighty queer you must acknowledge '-
-
Up spake I hotly 'That is where you err '-
But some one thundered in my ear 'You shan'tG
Be interrupting these proceedings sirD
The question was addressed to General Grant '-
Some other things were spoken which I can'tH
Distinctly now recall but I inferD
By certain flushings of my cheeks and foreheadB
Posterity's environment is torridI
-
Then heard I this was in a dream remarkJ
Another Voice clear comfortable strongK
As Grant's great shade replying from the darkJ
Said in a tone that rang the earth alongK
And thrilled the senses of the Judges' throngK
'I'd rather you would question why in parkJ
And street my monuments were not erectedI
Than why they were ' Then waking I reflectedI
