Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABBACC DEDEEDF GD HDBI JKJKKJIISleep fell upon my senses and I dreamed | A |
Long years had circled since my life had fled | B |
The world was different and all things seemed | A |
Remote and strange like noises to the dead | B |
And one great Voice there was and something said | B |
'Posterity is speaking rightly deemed | A |
Infallible ' and so I gave attention | C |
Hoping Posterity my name would mention | C |
- | |
'Illustrious Spirit ' said the Voice 'appear | D |
While we confirm eternally thy fame | E |
Before our dread tribunal answer here | D |
Why do no statues celebrate thy name | E |
No monuments thy services proclaim | E |
Why did not thy contemporaries rear | D |
To thee some schoolhouse or memorial college | F |
It looks almighty queer you must acknowledge ' | - |
- | |
Up spake I hotly 'That is where you err ' | - |
But some one thundered in my ear 'You shan't | G |
Be interrupting these proceedings sir | D |
The question was addressed to General Grant ' | - |
Some other things were spoken which I can't | H |
Distinctly now recall but I infer | D |
By certain flushings of my cheeks and forehead | B |
Posterity's environment is torrid | I |
- | |
Then heard I this was in a dream remark | J |
Another Voice clear comfortable strong | K |
As Grant's great shade replying from the dark | J |
Said in a tone that rang the earth along | K |
And thrilled the senses of the Judges' throng | K |
'I'd rather you would question why in park | J |
And street my monuments were not erected | I |
Than why they were ' Then waking I reflected | I |
