Why should he not have been allowedA
To thread with peaceful feet the crowdA
Which filled that Christian streetB
The Decalogue he had observedC
From Faith in Jesus had not swervedC
And scorning pious platitudesD
He saw in the BeatitudesD
A lamp to guide his feetB
-
He knew that Jonah downed the whaleE
And made no bones of it The taleE
That Ananias toldF
He swore was true He had no doubtG
That Daniel laid the lions outG
In short he had all holinessD
All meekness and all lowlinessD
And was with saints enrolledF
-
'Tis true some slight excess of zealH
Sincerely to promote the wealH
Of this most Christian stateI
Had moved him rudely to divideJ
The queue that was a pagan's prideJ
And in addition certifyK
The Faith by making fur to flyK
From pelt as well as pateI
-
But Heavenly Father thou dost knowL
That in this town these actions goL
For nothing worth a nameM
Nay every editorial assD
To prove they never come to passD
Will damn his soul eternallyH
Although in his own journal heH
May read the printed shameM
-
From bloody hands the reins of pow'rN
Fall slack the high decisive hourO
Strikes not for liars' earsD
Remove O Father the disgraceD
That stains our California's faceD
And consecrate to human goodP
The strength of her young womanhoodP
And all her golden yearsD
