Goldenson hanged Well Heaven forbidA
That I should smile above himB
Though truth to tell I never didA
Exactly love himB
-
It can't be wrong though to rejoiceC
That his unpleasing capersD
Are ended Silent is his voiceC
In all the papersD
-
No longer he's a show no moreE
Bear like his den he's walkingF
No longer can he hold the floorE
When I'd be talkingF
-
The laws that govern jails are badG
If such displays are lawfulH
The fate of the assassin's sadG
But ours is awfulH
-
What shall a wretch condemned to dieI
In shame upon the gibbetI
Be set before the public eyeI
As an 'exhibit'I
-
His looks his actions noted downJ
His words if light or solemnK
And all this hawked about the townJ
So much a columnK
-
The press of course will publish newsL
However it may get itI
But blast the sheriff who'll abuseM
His powers to let itI
-
Nay this is not ingratitudeI
I'm no reporter trulyN
Nor yet an editor I'm rudeI
Because unrulyN
-
Because I burn with shame and rageO
Beyond my power of tellingF
To see assassins in a cageO
And keepers yellingF
-
'Walk up Walk up ' the showman criesP
'Observe the lion's posesQ
His stormy mane his glooming eyesP
His hold your noses '-
-
How long O Lord shall Law and RightI
Be mocked for gain or gloryN
And angels weep as they reciteI
The shameful storyN
