A Year's Casualties Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF

Slain as they lay by the secret slowA
Pitiless hand of an unseen foeA
Two score thousand old soldiers have crossedB
The river to join the loved and lostB
In the space of a year their spirits fledC
Silent and white to the camp of the deadC
-
One after one they fall asleepD
And the pension agents awake to weepD
And orphaned statesmen are loud in their wailE
As the souls flit by on the evening galeE
O Father of Battles pray give us releaseF
From the horrors of peace the horrors of peaceF
