Come Stanford let us sit at easeA
And talk as old friends doB
You talk of anything you pleaseA
And I will talk of youB
-
You recently have said I hearC
That you would like to goD
To serve as Senator That's queerE
Have you told William StowD
-
Once when the Legislature saidF
'Go Stanford and be great '-
You lifted up your Jovian headF
And everlooked the StateG
-
As one made leisurely awakeH
You lightly rubbed your eyesI
And answered 'Thank you please to makeH
A note of my surpriseI
-
'But who are they who skulk asideJ
As to get out of reachK
And in their clothing strive to hideJ
Three thousand dollars eachK
-
'Not members of your body sureL
No that can hardly beM
All statesmen I suppose are pureL
What there are rogues Dear me '-
-
You added you'll recall that thoughD
You were surprised and painedN
You thought upon the whole you'd goD
And in that mind remainedN
-
Now what so great a change has wroughtO
That you so frankly speakP
Of 'seeking' honors once unsoughtO
Because you 'scorned to seek'P
-
Do you not fear the grave reproofQ
In good Creed Haymond's eyeR
Will Stephen Gage not stand aloofQ
And pass you coldly byR
-
O fear you not that Vrooman's lichS
Will rise from earth and pointO
At you a scornful finger whichS
May lack perchance a jointO
-
Go Stanford where the violets growD
And join their modest trainT
Await the work of William StowD
And be surprised againU
