To Frank O HaraA
-
Sometimes when my eyes are redB
I go up on top of the RCA BuildingC
and gaze at my world ManhattanD
my buildings streets I ve done feats inE
lofts beds coldwater flatsF
on Fifth Ave below which I also bear in mindG
its ant cars little yellow taxis menH
walking the size of specks of woolI
Panorama of the bridges sunrise over Brooklyn machineJ
sun go down over New Jersey where I was bornK
Paterson where I played with antsL
my later loves on th StreetM
my greater loves of Lower East SideN
my once fabulous amours in the BronxO
farawayP
paths crossing in these hidden streetsQ
my history summed up my absencesR
and ecstasies in HarlemS
sun shining down on all I ownT
in one eyeblink to the horizonD
in my last eternityU
matter is waterV
-
-
SadW
I take the elevator and goX
down ponderingC
and walk on the pavements staring into all man sY
plateglass facesZ
questioning after who lovesA2
and stop bemusedB2
in front of an automobile shopwindowB2
standing lost in calm thoughtB2
traffic moving up down th Avenue blocks behind meU
waiting for a moment whenH
-
-
Time to go home cook supper listen toB2
the romantic war news on the radioB2
all movement stopsC2
I walk in the timeless sadness of existenceD2
tenderness flowing thru the buildingsE2
my fingertips touching reality s faceF2
my own face streaked with tears in the mirrorV
of some window at duskG2
where I have no desireV
for bonbons or to own the dresses or JapaneseH2
lampshades of intellectionH
-
-
Confused by the spectacle around meU
Man struggling up the streetB2
with packages newspapersI2
ties beautiful suitsJ2
toward his desireV
Man woman streaming over the pavementsK2
red lights clocking hurried watchesZ
movements at the curbL2
-
-
And all these streets leadingC
so crosswise honking lengthilyI
by avenuesM2
stalked by high buildings or crusted into slumsN2
thru such halting trafficO2
screaming cars and enginesP2
so painfully to thisQ2
countryside this graveyardB2
this stillnessR2
on deathbed or mountainH
once seenH
never regained or desiredB2
in the mind to comeS
where all Manhattan that I ve seen must disappearS2
