The leaves are many under my feetA
And drift one wayB
Their scent of death is weary and sweetA
A flight of them is in the greyB
Where sky and forest meetA
-
The low winds moan for sad sweet yearsC
The birds sing all for painD
Of a common thing to weary earsC
Only a summer's fate of rainD
And a woman's fate of tearsE
-
I walk to love and life aloneF
Over these mournful placesG
Across the summer overthrownF
The dead joys of these silent facesG
To claim my ownF
-
I know his heart has beat to brightH
Sweet loves gone byI
I know the leaves that die to nightH
Once budded to the skyI
And I shall die from his delightH
-
O leaves so quietly ending nowJ
You heard the cuckoos singK
And I will grow upon my boughJ
If only for a springK
And fall when the rain is on my browJ
-
O tell me tell me ere you dieI
Is it worth the painD
You bloomed so fair you waved so highI
Now that the sad days waneD
Are you repenting where you lieI
-
I lie amongst you and I kissL
Your fragrance moulderingK
O dead delights is it such blissL
That tuneful SpringK
Is love so sweet that comes to thisL
-
Kiss me again as I kiss youM
Kiss me againN
For all your tuneful nights of dewM
In this your time of rainD
For all your kisses when Spring was newM
-
You will not broken hearts let beO
I pass across your deathP
To a golden summer you shall not seeO
And in your dying breathP
There is no benison for meO
-
There is an autumn yet to waneD
There are leaves yet to fallQ
Which when I kiss may kiss againN
And pitied pity me all for allQ
And love me in mist and rainD
