The Water-witch Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB BDED FGHG IJKJ LMFM NOLO PGFQ RSTS

The little creek went winding downA
Twixt whispering reeds and small blue flowersB
Singing a pleasant summer songC
Of holidays and playtime hoursB
-
We reached it at the noonday hoursB
Coming from the scrub aisles dime and coolD
Laden with ferns and lilies whiteE
And rested by it s deepest poolD
-
And while we watched with drowsy eyesF
The shimmering sunlight on the plainG
The water witch within the streamH
Arose and stood between us twainG
-
She looked on me with scornful eyeI
And mocking smile that held no mirthJ
She knew my simple soul was kinK
To the brown kindly homely earthJ
-
But she kissed Maye upon the browL
As though to steal her soul awayM
She kissed here on her Irish eyesF
Her faery eyes now green now greyM
-
And now she walks alone our girlN
Aloof from all life s joys and painsO
The witch s kiss is on her browL
The dancing water in her veinsO
-
Ah For the hearts that cherish herP
That sigh and pine with secret painG
For her cool lips and smiling eyesF
For Maye will never love againQ
-
Shallow and cold as water s selfR
And my warm heart that loves her wellS
Can only breathe a prayer to HeavenT
To break the water witch s spellS
