The Old Days - And The New Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGBGGHIH GJKJGHLH DGKGAHMH

Mid wattle scents and sounds of SpringA
The old man dreaming in his chairB
Is back where skylarks soar and singA
In sunshine o er the hills of ClareB
And since all Irishmen have beenC
True lovers since the world beganD
A flush still tints his withered cheekE
At thoughts of Bessie QuinlevanD
-
Ah Danny lad she was the girlF
So fine and straight in all her waysG
The price of every dance and fairB
There s no such women nowadaysG
Young Danny plaiting stockwhip thongsG
Smiles o er his grandsire s lock of greyH
Rememb ring with a lovers prideI
The wild rise grace of Betty SheaH
-
The old man in his dreams pursuesG
Through hurling fields the flying ballJ
Where his swift stroke was keen and strongK
And his the fleetest foot of allJ
While Danny whistling as he goesG
Thinks of the latest football frayH
Leading the victors down the fieldL
Beneath the smile of Betty SheaH
-
Sweet Bessie Quinleven is goneD
In Clare churchyard her body liesG
Her gentle soul has blossomed longK
Amid the flowers of ParadiseG
But through the sweetness of the SpringA
By winding paths with wattle gayH
Radiant with youth and happy loveM
Young Danny rides with Betty SheaH
