As we came down the old boreenA
Rose and I Rose and IB
At vesper time on Sunday e enA
We heard a banshee cryB
Beyond the churchyard dim and darkC
Neath whispering elms and yew trees starkC
Where our star shone a corpse like sparkC
Against the wintry skyB
-
We heard and shuddered sick with dreadD
Rose and I Rose and IB
As the shrill keening rang o erheadD
Where cloud wrack floated highB
Our two young hearts long sorely triedD
By poverty and love deniedD
Still waiting for some favouring tideD
And now Death come so nighB
-
Which of us two is called awayE
You or I You or IB
I heard my patient poor love sayE
With bitter plaintive sighB
Neither dear girl I bravely saidD
To Mary Mother bow your headD
And cry for help to Her insteadD
Nor heed the Banshee s cryB
-
We raised our hearts in fervent prayerF
Rose and I Rose and IB
Nor knew our troubles ended thereF
Our happiness came nighB
For twas the grim old farmer heG
My only kin rich miserlyG
Who dying left his wealth to meG
For whom the banshee criedD
