Last night when I was listeninA
Alone to wind and rainA
He took the chair beside meB
Himself come home againA
-
His kind blue eyes were smilinA
Beneath his thatch of greyC
He laid his hand on my handD
The ould sweetheartin wayC
-
I pressed my cheek upon itE
Remembering bitterlyB
The times he faced his daily toilF
Without one smile from meB
-
And yet his meals were always goodG
His clothes well kept and cleanA
The neighbours sure will tell youH
The splendid wife I ve beenA
-
But in Life s stress and struggleI
We somehow grew apartJ
You know these Irish mothersK
'Tis the childer has their heartJ
-
And he grew grim and close lippedL
And harder day by dayC
Poor man too tired for laughterM
Too worried to be gayC
-
But how his care enclosed usN
For all he was so grimO
The very rafters of our homeP
Were cut and laid by himO
-
And I that might have cheered himO
The bitter words I saidQ
Oh God that we rememberM
Only when they are deadQ
-
But now my arms were round himO
The room seemed full of flowersK
And Youth came back and sunshineA
That glorious time was oursK
-
The firelight flamed and flickeredR
The embers fell apartJ
I woke to empty silenceS
With sorrow at my heartJ
-
The wild winds brought the morningT
The dawn was red and chillU
And Himself was lyin sleepinA
In the graveyard on the hillU
