Oh my heart beat high with joy elateA
When Danny rode in the Hunters PlateA
On Enniskillen the raking greyB
A mighty jumper with power to stayB
Velvet muzzled with eye of fireC
Clean legged slant shouldered and tough as wireC
Oh the joy that can fill a colleen s breastD
When her man and horse are dong their bestD
The summer skies were without a cloudE
O er the heads of the frantic cheering crowdE
As he led the field right into the straightA
And his eyes met mine at the five barred gateA
Then they thundered by like a roaring floodF
And oh good luck to the Irish bloodF
The Irish blood that in horse or manG
Has never caved in since the world beganG
He took the last leap like a bird in the airH
Clearing the hurdle straight and fairH
And Enniskillen wonI
-
We d been married for one long blissful yearJ
Of hope and struggle of joy and fearJ
Our hearts were young and our hopes were highK
And the star of love shone bright in our skyK
And I felt like a queen as I hushed to restD
The little bright head that lay on my breastD
But the air was stifling close and strangeL
With a scent of smoke from the burning rangeL
And I prayed for Danny riding awayB
On a cattle hunt on the gallant greyB
The smoke came down like a cloud of nightM
And ranges and trees were blotted from sightM
When Enniskillen came galloping homeN
His grey coat mottled and flecked with foamN
And Danny s face was rigid and whiteM
Come Sweetheart we ride for our lives to nightM
Wrap this cloak around you hold Baby fastO
And pray till the danger be overpassedO
For the wind has arisen with whirling forceP
And our lives depend on the dear grey horseP
-
And on God s good mercy A streak of lightO
Enniskillen went racing into the nightO
The dim stars peered from a reeling skyK
And wild bush creatures came rushing byK
As crash on crash the timber fellQ
And the burning wind was a blast of hellQ
But Danny held me with steady armR
And the Babe between us slept safe from harmR
-
We were nearly through and the battle wonI
When Danny drew rein with Ah God We re doneI
For before us the flames met roaring wideO
Though safety lay on the other sideO
One moment a tremble the grey horse stoodO
Then oh thank God for the Irish bloodO
The Irish blood that in horse and manG
Has never caved in since the world beganG
With a snort of defiance to smoke and flameS
Through the raging furnace the grey horse cameS
Though laboured sobs shook his trembling sideO
And falling cinders scorched his hideO
And Enniskillen wonI
-
The grass is waving on hill and plainT
And peace and plenty are here againU
Our little home rebuilt once moreV
And the lean struggling year are o erC
There s a paddock green on the river flatO
Where a dear grey horse roams strong ans fatO
Though on his back the scars still showW
Deep scars where never a hair can growW
But still he holds his head with prideO
And treads the earth with a kingly strideO
Proud of his Irish bloodO
