Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEAAFFGGHHI JJKKDDLLBBMMNNMMOOPP OOKKQQRR IIOOOOGGSSOOI TUVCOOWWOOOOh my heart beat high with joy elate | A |
When Danny rode in the Hunters Plate | A |
On Enniskillen the raking grey | B |
A mighty jumper with power to stay | B |
Velvet muzzled with eye of fire | C |
Clean legged slant shouldered and tough as wire | C |
Oh the joy that can fill a colleen s breast | D |
When her man and horse are dong their best | D |
The summer skies were without a cloud | E |
O er the heads of the frantic cheering crowd | E |
As he led the field right into the straight | A |
And his eyes met mine at the five barred gate | A |
Then they thundered by like a roaring flood | F |
And oh good luck to the Irish blood | F |
The Irish blood that in horse or man | G |
Has never caved in since the world began | G |
He took the last leap like a bird in the air | H |
Clearing the hurdle straight and fair | H |
And Enniskillen won | I |
- | |
We d been married for one long blissful year | J |
Of hope and struggle of joy and fear | J |
Our hearts were young and our hopes were high | K |
And the star of love shone bright in our sky | K |
And I felt like a queen as I hushed to rest | D |
The little bright head that lay on my breast | D |
But the air was stifling close and strange | L |
With a scent of smoke from the burning range | L |
And I prayed for Danny riding away | B |
On a cattle hunt on the gallant grey | B |
The smoke came down like a cloud of night | M |
And ranges and trees were blotted from sight | M |
When Enniskillen came galloping home | N |
His grey coat mottled and flecked with foam | N |
And Danny s face was rigid and white | M |
Come Sweetheart we ride for our lives to night | M |
Wrap this cloak around you hold Baby fast | O |
And pray till the danger be overpassed | O |
For the wind has arisen with whirling force | P |
And our lives depend on the dear grey horse | P |
- | |
And on God s good mercy A streak of light | O |
Enniskillen went racing into the night | O |
The dim stars peered from a reeling sky | K |
And wild bush creatures came rushing by | K |
As crash on crash the timber fell | Q |
And the burning wind was a blast of hell | Q |
But Danny held me with steady arm | R |
And the Babe between us slept safe from harm | R |
- | |
We were nearly through and the battle won | I |
When Danny drew rein with Ah God We re done | I |
For before us the flames met roaring wide | O |
Though safety lay on the other side | O |
One moment a tremble the grey horse stood | O |
Then oh thank God for the Irish blood | O |
The Irish blood that in horse and man | G |
Has never caved in since the world began | G |
With a snort of defiance to smoke and flame | S |
Through the raging furnace the grey horse came | S |
Though laboured sobs shook his trembling side | O |
And falling cinders scorched his hide | O |
And Enniskillen won | I |
- | |
The grass is waving on hill and plain | T |
And peace and plenty are here again | U |
Our little home rebuilt once more | V |
And the lean struggling year are o er | C |
There s a paddock green on the river flat | O |
Where a dear grey horse roams strong ans fat | O |
Though on his back the scars still show | W |
Deep scars where never a hair can grow | W |
But still he holds his head with pride | O |
And treads the earth with a kingly stride | O |
Proud of his Irish blood | O |
