The sun is setting behind the rangeA
his golden rays pour downB
On a little figure childish strangeA
Bending over a volume wornC
Whose green clad cover dusty and tornC
Bears a 'harp without a crown'C
-
The young eyes turn to the distant westD
Where the sunset colours glowE
And thoughts are thrilling the childish breastD
Of gallant valorous deeds long doneC
Of glorious battles fought and wonC
In the days of long agoE
-
His fancy peoples the lonely glenC
With the ghosts of the vanished pastF
Till he hears the tramp of armed menC
And O'Niall's plumed horsemen ridgeG
While the 'Red Hand' flutters in all its prideH
Above them on the blastF
-
And just where the road winds into the creekI
Where the jasmine stars the shadeJ
With the soft wind kissing her blushful cheekI
Beautiful grey eyed Dierdrie standsK
Stretching to Naisi her snowy handsK
Half welcoming half dismayedJ
-
The purple hues of the gully changeA
With the deepening shades of nightL
And far in a nook of the distant rangeA
Is Michael Dwyer of the Wicklow glenC
Holding his desperate stand againC
'Gainst the redcoat soldier's mightL
-
The west wind rises across the creekI
And with it the crash of steelM
Carries a flush to the listener's cheekI
'Tis only the crash of branches dryN
But in it he hears the battle cryN
And the patriot's words of zealM
-
And martyred shades come thronging aroundO
To the roll call of LibertyP
Louder their eager voices soundO
Till towering tree tops and glowing skyN
Are echoing back the defiant cryN
'Michael answer for me '-
-
The moon is rising above the creekI
The shining stars look downC
On a little dreamer whose pillowed cheekI
Rests in a volume wornC
Whose green clad cover dusty and tornC
Bears ' Harp without a Crown'C
