The sun is setting behind the range	A
his golden rays pour down	B
On a little figure childish strange	A
Bending over a volume worn	C
Whose green clad cover dusty and torn	C
Bears a 'harp without a crown'	C

The young eyes turn to the distant west	D
Where the sunset colours glow	E
And thoughts are thrilling the childish breast	D
Of gallant valorous deeds long done	C
Of glorious battles fought and won	C
In the days of long ago	E
	-
His fancy peoples the lonely glen	C
With the ghosts of the vanished past	F
Till he hears the tramp of armed men	C
And O'Niall's plumed horsemen ridge	G
While the 'Red Hand' flutters in all its pride	H
Above them on the blast	F

And just where the road winds into the creek	I
Where the jasmine stars the shade	J
With the soft wind kissing her blushful cheek	I
Beautiful grey eyed Dierdrie stands	K
Stretching to Naisi her snowy hands	K
Half welcoming half dismayed	J

The purple hues of the gully change	A
With the deepening shades of night	L
And far in a nook of the distant range	A
Is Michael Dwyer of the Wicklow glen	C
Holding his desperate stand again	C
'Gainst the redcoat soldier's might	L

The west wind rises across the creek	I
And with it the crash of steel	M
Carries a flush to the listener's cheek	I
'Tis only the crash of branches dry	N
But in it he hears the battle cry	N
And the patriot's words of zeal	M

And martyred shades come thronging around	O
To the roll call of Liberty	P
Louder their eager voices sound	O
Till towering tree tops and glowing sky	N
Are echoing back the defiant cry	N

The shining stars look down	C
On a little dreamer whose pillowed cheek	I
Rests in a volume worn	C
