'Horatio Nelson Honor est a Nilo'A
-
A hundred years have lightened and have wanedB
Since ancient Nile by grace of Nelson gainedB
A glory higher in story now than timeC
Saw when his kings were gods that raged and reignedB
The day that left even England more sublimeC
And higher on heights that none but she may climbC
Abides above all shock of change born chanceD
Where hope and memory hear the stars keep chimeC
The strong and sunbright lie whose name was FranceD
Arose against the sun of truth whose glanceD
Laughed large from the eyes of England fierce as fireE
Whence eyes wax blind that gaze on truth askanceD
A name above all names of heroes higherE
Than song may sound or heart of man aspireF
Rings as the very voice that speaks the seaG
To day from all the sea's enkindling lyreF
The sound that bids the soul of silence beG
Fire and a rapturous music speaks and weG
Hear what the sea's heart utters wide and farH
This was his day and this day's light was heG
O sea our sea that hadst him for thy starH
A hundred years that fall upon thee areH
Even as a hundred flakes of rain or snowI
No storm of battle signs thee with a scarH
But never more may ship that sails thee showI
But never may the sun that loves thee knowI
But never may thine England give thee moreJ
A man whose life and death shall praise thee soI
The Nile the sea the battle and the shoreJ
Heard as we hear one word arise and soarJ
Beheld one name above them tower and glowI
Nelson a light that time bows down beforeJ
