At the time when the stars are greyA
And the gold of the molten moonB
Fades and the twilight is thinnedC
And the sun leaps up and the windD
A light rose not of the dayA
A stronger light than of noonB
-
As the light of a face much lovedE
Was the face of the light that clombF
As a mother's whitened with woesG
Her adorable head that aroseG
As the sound of a God that is movedH
Her voice went forth upon RomeF
-
At her lips it fluttered and failedI
Twice and sobbed into songJ
And sank as a flame sinks underK
Then spake and the speech was thunderK
And the cheek as he heard it paledI
Of the wrongdoer grown grey with the wrongJ
-
Is it time is it time appointedL
Angel of time is it nearM
For the spent night aches into dayA
When the kings shall slay not or prayA
And the high priest accursed and anointedL
Sickens to deathward with fearM
-
For the bones of my slain are stirredN
And the seed of my earth in her wombF
Moves as the heart of a budL
Beating with odorous bloodL
To the tune of the loud first birdN
Burns and yearns into bloomF
-
I lay my hand on her bosomF
My hand on the heart of my earthO
And I feel as with shiver and sobP
The triumphant heart in her throbP
The dead petals dilate into blossomF
The divine blood beat into birthO
-
O my earth are the springs in thee dryQ
O sweet is thy body a tombF
Nay springs out of springs deriveR
And summers from summers aliveR
And the living from them that dieQ
No tomb is here but a wombF
-
O manifold womb and divineS
Give me fruit of my children giveT
I have given thee my dew for thy rootU
Give thou me for my mouth of thy fruitU
Thine are the dead that are mineS
And mine are thy sons that liveR
-
O goodly children O strongJ
Italian spirits that wearV
My glories as garments about youW
Could time or the world misdoubt youW
Behold in disproof of the wrongJ
The field of the grave pits thereV
-
And ye that fell upon sleepX
We have you too with us yetY
Fairer than life or than youthZ
Is this to die for the truthZ
No death can sink you so deepX
As their graves whom their brethren forgetY
-
Were not your pains as my painsA2
As my name are your names not divineS
Was not the light in your eyesB2
Mine the light of my skiesB2
And the sweet shed blood of your veinsA2
O my beautiful martyrs mineS
-
Of mine earth were your dear limbs madeC2
Of mine air was your sweet life's breathD2
At the breasts of my love ye were fedE2
O my children my chosen my deadE2
At my breasts where again ye are laidC2
At the old mother's bosom in deathD2
-
But ye that live O their brothersF2
Be ye to me as they wereK
Give me my children that liveR
What these dead grudged not to giveT
Who alive were sons of your mother'sF2
Whose lips drew breath of your airV
-
Till darkness by dawn be clovenS
Let youth's self mourn and abstainS
And love's self find not an hourK
And spring's self wear not a flowerK
And Lycoris with hair unenwovenS
Hail back to the banquet in vainS
-
So sooner and surer the gloryG2
That is not with us shall beG2
And stronger the hands that smiteC2
The heads of the sons of nightC2
And the sound throughout earth of our storyG2
Give all men heart to be freeG2
