Last high star of the years whose thunderA
Still men's listening remembrance hearsB
Last light left of our fathers' yearsC
Watched with honour and hailed with wonderA
Thee too then have the years borne underA
Thou too then hast regained thy peersC
-
Wings that warred with the winds of morningD
Storm winds rocking the red great dawnE
Close at last and a film is drawnE
Over the eyes of the storm bird scorningD
Now no longer the loud wind's warningD
Waves that threaten or waves that fawnE
-
Peers were none of thee left us livingD
Peers of theirs we shall see no moreF
Eight years over the full fourscoreF
Knew thee now shalt thou sleep forgivingD
All griefs past of the wild world's givingD
Moored at last on the stormless shoreF
-
Worldwide liberty's lifelong loverF
Lover no less of the strength of songD
Sea king swordsman hater of wrongD
Over thy dust that the dust shall coverF
Comes my song as a bird to hoverF
Borne of its will as of wings alongD
-
Cherished of thee were this brief song's brothersG
Now that follows them cherishing theeH
Over the tides and the tideless seaH
Soft as a smile of the earth our mother'sG
Flies it faster than all those othersG
First of the troop at thy tomb to beH
-
Memories of Greece and the mountain's hollowI
Guarded alone of thy loyal swordJ
Hold thy name for our hearts in wardJ
Yet more fain are our hearts to followI
One way now with the southward swallowI
Back to the grave of the man their lordJ
-
Heart of hearts art thou moved not hearingD
Surely if hearts of the dead may hearF
Whose true heart it is now draws nearF
Surely the sense of it thrills thee cheeringD
Darkness and death with the news now nearingD
Shelley Trelawny rejoins thee hereF
