John Ford: Vi Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBCDEFDEF

HEW hard the marble from the mountain s heartA
Where hardest night holds fast in iron gloomB
Gems brighter than an April dawn in bloomB
That his Memnoniah likeness thence may startA
Revealed whose hand with high funereal artA
Carved night and chiselled shadow be the tombB
That speaks him famous graven with signs of doomB
Intrenched inevitably in lines athwartC
As on some thunder blasted Titan s browD
His record of rebellion Not the dayE
Shall strike forth music from so stern a chordF
Touching this marble darkness none knows howD
And stars impenetrable of midnight mayE
So locms the likeness of thy soul John FordF
