Cromwell's Statue1 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABACBDBDDEDEEFEFFGF GGHGHHIHIIHI

What needs our Cromwell stone or bronze to sayA
His was the light that lit on England's wayA
The sundawn of her time compelling powerB
The noontide of her most imperial dayA
His hand won back the sea for England's dowerC
His footfall bade the Moor change heart and cowerB
His word on Milton's tongue spake law to FranceD
When Piedmont felt the she wolf Rome devourB
From Cromwell's eyes the light of England's glanceD
Flashed and bowed down the kings by grace of chanceD
The priest anointed princes one aloneE
By grace of England held their hosts in tranceD
The enthroned Republic from her kinglier throneE
Spake and her speech was Cromwell's Earth has knownE
No lordlier presence How should Cromwell standF
With kinglets and with queenlings hewn in stoneE
Incarnate England in his warrior handF
Smote and as fire devours the blackening brandF
Made ashes of their strengths who wrought her wrongG
And turned the strongholds of her foes to sandF
His praise is in the sea's and Milton's songG
What praise could reach him from the weakling throngG
That rules by leave of tongues whose praise is shameH
Him who made England out of weakness strongG
There needs no clarion's blast of broad blown fameH
To bid the world bear witness whence he cameH
Who bade fierce Europe fawn at England's heelI
And purged the plague of lineal rule with flameH
There needs no witness graven on stone or steelI
For one whose work bids fame bow down and kneelI
Our man of men whose time commanding nameH
Speaks England and proclaims her CommonwealI
