Art thou indeed among theseA
Thou of the tyrannous crewB
The kingdoms fed upon bloodC
O queen from of old of the seasA
England art thou of them tooB
That drink of the poisonous floodC
That hide under poisonous treesA
-
-
-
Nay thy name from of oldD
Mother was pure or we dreamedE
Purer we held thee than thisF
Purer fain would we holdD
So goodly a glory it seemedE
A fame so bounteous of blissF
So more precious than goldD
-
-
-
A praise so sweet in our earsG
That thou in the tempest of thingsH
As a rock for a refuge shouldst standI
In the bloodred river of tearsJ
Poured forth for the triumph of kingsH
A safeguard a sheltering landI
In the thunder and torrent of yearsG
-
-
-
Strangers came gladly to theeK
Exiles chosen of menL
Safe for thy sake in thy shadeM
Sat down at thy feet and were freeK
So men spake of thee thenL
Now shall their speaking be stayedM
Ah so let it not beK
-
-
Not for revenge or affrightM
Pride or a tyrannous lustM
Cast from thee the crown of thy praiseN
Mercy was thine in thy mightM
Strong when thou wert thou wert justM
Now in the wrong doing daysN
Cleave thou thou at least to the rightM
-
-
-
How should one charge thee how swayO
Save by the memories that wereP
Not thy gold nor the strength of thy shipsQ
Nor the might of thine armies at bayO
Made thee mother most fairR
But a word from republican lipsQ
Said in thy name in thy dayO
-
-
-
Hast thou said it and hast thou forgotM
Is thy praise in thine ears as a scoffS
Blood of men guiltless was shedM
Children and souls without spotM
Shed but in places far offS
Let slaughter no more be saidM
Milton and slaughter was notM
-
-
-
Was it not said of thee tooM
Now but now by thy foesT
By the slaves that had slain their FranceU
And thee would slay as they slewM
Down with her walls that encloseT
Freemen that eye us askanceU
Fugitives men that are trueM
-
-
-
This was thy praise or thy blameV
From bondsman or freeman to beK
Pure from pollution of slavesW
Clean of their sins and thy nameV
Bloodless innocent freeK
Now if thou be not thy wavesW
Wash not from off thee thy shameV
-
-
-
Freeman he is not but slaveX
Whoso in fear for the StateM
Cries for surety of bloodM
Help of gibbet and graveX
Neither is any land greatM
Whom in her fear stricken moodM
These things only can saveX
-
-
-
Lo how fair from afarY
Taintless of tyranny standsZ
Thy mighty daughter for yearsG
Who trod the winepress of warA2
Shines with immaculate handsZ
Slays not a foe neither fearsG
Stains not peace with a scarY
-
-
-
Be not as tyrant or slaveX
England be not as theseA
Thou that wert other than theyO
Stretch out thine hand but to saveX
Put forth thy strength and releaseB2
Lest there arise if thou slayO
Thy shame as a ghost from the graveX
