Written after entering New York Harbor at DaybreakA
-
Up the vast harbor with the morning sunB
The ship swept in from seaC
Gigantic towers arose the night was doneB
And there stood LibertyC
-
Silent the great torch lifted in one handD
The dawn in her proud eyesE
Silent for all the shouts that vex her landD
Silent hailing the skiesE
-
Hailing that mightier Kingdom of the BlestF
Our seamen sought of oldG
The dream that lured the nations through the WestF
The city of sunset goldG
-
Saxon and Norman in one wedded soulH
Shook out one flag like fireI
But westward westward moved the gleaming goalH
Westward the vast desireI
-
Westward and ever westward ran the callJ
They followed the pilgrim sunB
Seeking that land which should enfold them allJ
And weld all hearts in oneB
-
Here on this mightier continent apartK
Here on these rolling plainsL
Swells the first throb of that immortal heartK
The pulse of those huge veinsL
-
Still at these towers our Old World cities jestF
And neither hear nor seeC
The brood of gods at that gigantic breastF
The conquering race to beC
-
Chosen from many for no sluggard soulH
Confronts that night of starsM
The trumpets of the last Republic rollH
Far off an end to warsN
-
An end an end to that wild blood red ageO
That made and keeps us blindP
A mightier realm shall be her heritageQ
The kingdom of mankindP
-
Chosen from many nations and made oneB
But first O Mother from theeC
When following following on that Pilgrim sunB
Thy Mayflower crossed the seaC
