JanuaryA
-
-
Come when no graver cares employB
Godfather come and see your boyB
Your presence will be sun in winterC
Making the little one leap for joyB
-
For being of that honest fewD
Who give the Fiend himself his dueD
Should eighty thousand college councilsE
Thunder 'Anathema ' friend at youD
-
Should all our churchmen foam in spiteF
At you so careful of the rightF
Yet one lay hearth would give you welcomeG
Take it and come to the Isle of WightF
-
Where far from noise and smoke of townH
I watch the twilight falling brownH
All round a careless order'd gardenI
Close to the ridge of a noble downH
-
You'll have no scandal while you dineJ
But honest talk and wholesome wineJ
And only hear the magpie gossipK
Garrulous under a roof of pineJ
-
For groves of pine on either handL
To break the blast of winter standL
And further on the hoary ChannelM
Tumbles a billow on chalk and sandL
-
Where if below the milky steepN
Some ship of battle slowly creepN
And on thro' zones of light and shadowO
Glimmer away to the lonely deepN
-
We might discuss the Northern sinP
Which made a selfish war beginP
Dispute the claims arrange the chancesQ
Emperor Ottoman which shall winP
-
Or whether war's avenging rodR
Shall lash all Europe into bloodS
Till you should turn to dearer mattersT
Dear to the man that is dear to GodR
-
How best to help the slender storeU
How mend the dwellings of the poorV
How gain in life as life advancesQ
Valour and charity more and moreU
-
Come Maurice come the lawn as yetW
Is hoar with rime or spongy wetW
But when the wreath of March has blossom'dX
Crocus anemone violetY
-
Or later pay one visit hereZ
For those are few we hold as dearA2
Nor pay but one but come for manyA
Many and many a happy yearA2
