Part IA
-
On either side the river lieA
Long fields of barley and of ryeA
That clothe the wold and meet the skyA
And thro' the field the road runs byA
To many tower'd CamelotB
And up and down the people goC
Gazing where the lilies blowC
Round an island there belowC
The island of ShalottB
-
-
Willows whiten aspens quiverD
Little breezes dusk and shiverD
Thro' the wave that runs for everD
By the island in the riverD
Flowing down to CamelotB
Four gray walls and four gray towersE
Overlook a space of flowersE
And the silent isle imbowersE
The Lady of ShalottB
-
By the margin willow veil'dB
Slide the heavy barges trail'dB
By slow horses and unhail'dB
The shallop flitteth silken sail'dB
Skimming down to CamelotB
But who hath seen her wave her handB
Or at the casement seen her standB
Or is she known in all the landB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Only reapers reaping earlyF
In among the bearded barleyF
Hear a song that echoes cheerlyF
From the river winding clearlyF
Down to tower'd CamelotB
And by the moon the reaper wearyF
Piling sheaves in uplands airyF
Listening whispers 'Tis the fairyF
Lady of ShalottB
-
Part IIA
-
There she weaves by night and dayB
A magic web with colours gayB
She has heard a whisper sayB
A curse is on her if she stayB
To look down to CamelotB
She knows not what the curse may beF
And so she weaveth steadilyF
And little other care hath sheF
The Lady of ShalottB
-
And moving thro' a mirror clearG
That hangs before her all the yearG
Shadows of the world appearG
There she sees the highway nearG
Winding down to CamelotB
There the river eddy whirlsB
And there the surly village churlsB
And the red cloaks of market girlsB
Pass onward from ShalottB
-
Sometimes a troop of damsels gladB
An abbot on an ambling padB
Sometimes a curly shepherd ladB
Or long hair'd page in crimson cladB
Goes by to tower'd CamelotB
And sometimes thro' the mirror blueF
The knights come riding two and twoF
She hath no loyal knight and trueF
The Lady of ShalottB
-
But in her web she still delightsB
To weave the mirror's magic sightsB
For often thro' the silent nightsB
A funeral with plumes and lightsB
And music went to CamelotB
Or when the moon was overheadB
Came two young lovers lately wedB
I am half sick of shadows saidB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Part IIIA
-
A bow shot from her bower eavesB
He rode between the barley sheavesB
The sun came dazzling thro' the leavesB
And flamed upon the brazen greavesB
Of bold Sir LancelotB
A red cross knight for ever kneel'dB
To a lady in his shieldB
That sparkled on the yellow fieldB
Beside remote ShalottB
-
The gemmy bridle glitter'd freeF
Like to some branch of stars we seeF
Hung in the golden GalaxyF
The bridle bells rang merrilyF
As he rode down to CamelotB
And from his blazon'd baldric slungH
A mighty silver bugle hungH
And as he rode his armour rungH
Beside remote ShalottB
-
All in the blue unclouded weatherD
Thick jewell'd shone the saddle leatherD
The helmet and the helmet featherD
Burn'd like one burning flame togetherD
As he rode down to CamelotB
As often thro' the purple nightB
Below the starry clusters brightB
Some bearded meteor trailing lightB
Moves over still ShalottB
-
His broad clear brow in sunlight glow'dB
On burnish'd hooves his war horse trodeB
From underneath his helmet flow'dB
His coal black curls as on he rodeB
As he rode down to CamelotB
From the bank and from the riverD
He flash'd into the crystal mirrorD
Tirra lirra by the riverD
Sang Sir LancelotB
-
She left the web she left the loomI
She made three paces thro' the roomI
She saw the water lily bloomI
She saw the helmet and the plumeI
She look'd down to CamelotB
Out flew the web and floated wideB
The mirror crack'd from side to sideB
The curse is come upon me criedB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Part IVJ
-
In the stormy east wind strainingK
The pale yellow woods were waningK
The broad stream in his banks complainingK
Heavily the low sky rainingK
Over tower'd CamelotB
Down she came and found a boatB
Beneath a willow left afloatB
And round about the prow she wroteB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
And down the river's dim expanseB
Like some bold seer in a tranceB
Seeing all his own mischanceB
With a glassy countenanceB
Did she look to CamelotB
And at the closing of the dayB
She loosed the chain and down she layB
The broad stream bore her far awayB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Lying robed in snowy whiteB
That loosely flew to left and rightB
The leaves upon her falling lightB
Thro' the noises of the nightB
She floated down to CamelotB
And as the boat head wound alongL
The willowy hills and fields amongH
They heard her singing her last songL
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Heard a carol mournful holyF
Chanted loudly chanted lowlyF
Till her blood was frozen slowlyF
And her eyes were darken'd whollyF
Turn'd to tower'd CamelotB
For ere she reach'd upon the tideB
The first house by the water sideB
Singing in her song she diedB
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Under tower and balconyF
By garden wall and galleryF
A gleaming shape she floated byA
Dead pale between the houses highA
Silent into CamelotB
Out upon the wharfs they cameM
Knight and burgher lord and dameM
And round the prow they read her nameM
The Lady of ShalottB
-
Who is this and what is hereN
And in the lighted palace nearG
Died the sound of royal cheerG
And they cross'd themselves for fearG
All the knights at CamelotB
But Lancelot mused a little spaceB
He said She has a lovely faceB
God in his mercy lend her graceB
The Lady of ShalottB
