Of Old Sat Freedom Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJL MNMN

Of old sat Freedom on the heightsA
The thunders breaking at her feetB
Above her shook the starry lightsA
She heard the torrents meetB
-
There in her place she did rejoiceC
Self gather'd in her prophet mindD
But fragments of her mighty voiceC
Came rolling on the windD
-
Then stept she down thro' town and fieldE
To mingle with the human raceF
And part by part to men reveal'dE
The fullness of her faceF
-
Grave mother of majestic worksG
From her isle alter gazing downH
Who God like grasps the triple forksI
And King like wears the crownH
-
Her open eyes desire the truthJ
The wisdom of a thousand yearsK
Is in them May perpetual youthJ
Keep dry their light from tearsL
-
That her fair form may stand and shineM
Make bright our days and light our dreamsN
Turning to scorn with lips divineM
The falsehood of extremesN
