O true and tried so well and longA
Demand not thou a marriage layB
In that it is thy marriage dayB
Is music more than any songA
Nor have I felt so much of blissC
Since first he told me that he lovedD
A daughter of our house nor provedE
Since that dark day a day like thisC
-
Tho I since then have number d o erF
Some thrice three years they went and cameG
Remade the blood and changed the frameG
And yet is love not less but moreH
-
No longer caring to embalmI
In dying songs a dead regretJ
But like a statue solid setJ
And moulded in colossal calmI
-
Regret is dead but love is moreH
Than in the summers that are flownK
For I myself with these have grownK
To something greater than beforeH
-
Which makes appear the songs I madeL
As echoes out of weaker timesM
As half but idle brawling rhymesM
The sport of random sun and shadeL
-
But where is she the bridal flowerF
That must he made a wife ere noonN
She enters glowing like the moonN
Of Eden on its bridal bowerF
-
On me she bends her blissful eyesO
And then on thee they meet thy lookP
And brighten like the star that shookP
Betwixt the palms of paradiseQ
-
O when her life was yet in budR
He too foretold the perfect roseS
For thee she grew for thee she growsS
For ever and as fair as goodT
-
And thou art worthy full of powerF
As gentle liberal minded greatU
Consistent wearing all that weightU
Of learning lightly like a flowerF
-
But now set out the noon is nearV
And I must give away the brideW
She fears not or with thee besideW
And me behind her will not fearV
-
For I that danced her on my kneeX
That watch d her on her nurse s armY
That shielded all her life from harmY
At last must part with her to theeX
-
Now waiting to be made a wifeZ
Her feet my darling on the deadA2
Their pensive tablets round her headA2
And the most living words of lifeZ
-
Breathed in her ear The ring is onB2
The wilt thou answer d and againC2
The wilt thou ask d till out of twainD2
Her sweet I will has made you oneE2
-
Now sign your names which shall be readA2
Mute symbols of a joyful mornF2
By village eyes as yet unbornF2
The names are sign d and overheadA2
-
Begins the clash and clang that tellsG2
The joy to every wandering breezeH2
The blind wall rocks and on the treesH2
The dead leaf trembles to the bellsG2
-
O happy hour and happier hoursI2
Await them Many a merry faceJ2
Salutes them maidens of the placeJ2
That pelt us in the porch with flowersI2
-
O happy hour behold the brideW
With him to whom her hand I gaveK2
They leave the porch they pass the graveK2
That has to day its sunny sideW
-
To day the grave is bright for meX
For them the light of life increasedL2
Who stay to share the morning feastL2
Who rest to night beside the seaX
-
Let all my genial spirits advanceM2
To meet and greet a whiter sunE2
My drooping memory will not shunE2
The foaming grape of eastern FranceM2
-
It circles round and fancy playsN2
And hearts are warm d and faces bloomO2
As drinking health to bride and groomO2
We wish them store of happy daysN2
-
Nor count me all to blame if IP2
Conjecture of a stiller guestQ2
Perchance perchance among the restQ2
And tho in silence wishing joyR2
-
But they must go the time draws onB2
And those white favour d horses waitU
They rise but linger it is lateU
Farewell we kiss and they are goneS2
-
A shade falls on us like the darkT2
From little cloudlets on the grassU2
But sweeps away as out we passU2
To range the woods to roam the parkT2
-
Discussing how their courtship grewV2
And talk of others that are wedA2
And how she look d and what he saidA2
And back we come at fall of dewV2
-
Again the feast the speech the gleeX
The shade of passing thought the wealthW2
Of words and wit the double healthW2
The crowning cup the three times threeX
-
And last the dance till I retireX2
Dumb is that tower which spake so loudY2
And high in heaven the streaming cloudY2
And on the downs a rising fireF
-
And rise O moon from yonder downZ2
Till over down and over daleA3
All night the shining vapour sailA3
And pass the silent lighted townZ2
-
The white faced halls the glancing rillsU2
And catch at every mountain headA2
And o er the friths that branch and spreadA2
Their sleeping silver thro the hillsU2
-
And touch with shade the bridal doorsU2
With tender gloom the roof the wallB3
And breaking let the splendour fallB3
To spangle all the happy shoresU2
-
By which they rest and ocean soundsU2
And star and system rolling pastC3
A soul shall draw from out the vastC3
And strike his being into boundsU2
-
And moved thro life of lower phaseU2
Result in man be born and thinkD3
And act and love a closer linkD3
Betwixt us and the crowning raceU2
-
Of those that eye to eye shall lookP
On knowledge under whose commandE3
Is Earth and Earth s and in their handE3
Is Nature like an open bookP
-
No longer half akin to bruteF3
For all we thought and loved and didG3
And hoped and suffer d is but seedH3
Of what in them is flower and fruitF3
-
Whereof the man that with me trodI3
This planet was a noble typeJ3
Appearing ere the times were ripeJ3
That friend of mine who lives in GodI3
-
That God which ever lives and lovesU2
One God one law one elementK3
And one far off divine eventL3
To which the whole creation movesU2
