Of love that never found his earthly closeA
What sequel Streaming eyes and breaking heartsB
Or all the same as if he had not beenC
Not so Shall Error in the round of timeD
Still father Truth O shall the braggart shoutE
For some blind glimpse of freedom work itselfF
Thro' madness hated by the wise to lawG
System and empire Sin itself be foundH
The cloudy porch oft opening on the SunI
And only he this wonder dead becomeJ
Mere highway dust or year by year aloneK
Sit brooding in the ruins of a lifeL
Nightmare of youth the spectre of himselfF
If this were thus if this indeed were allM
Better the narrow brain the stony heartN
The staring eye glazed o'er with sapless daysO
The long mechanic pacings to and froP
The set gray life and apathetic endQ
But am I not the nobler thro' thy loveR
O three times less unworthy likewise thouS
Art more thro' Love and greater than thy yearsT
The Sun will run his orbit and the MoonU
Her circle Wait and Love himself will bringV
The drooping flower of knowledge changed to fruitW
Of wisdom Wait my faith is large in TimeD
And that which shapes it to some perfect endQ
Will some one say then why not ill for goodX
Why took ye not your pastime To that manY
My work shall answer since I knew the rightZ
And did it for a man is not as GodA2
But then most Godlike being most a manY
So let me think 'tis well for thee and meB2
Ill fated that I am what lot is mineC2
Whose foresight preaches peace my heart so slowP
To feel it For how hard it seem'd to meB2
When eyes love languid thro' half tears would dwellD2
One earnest earnest moment upon mineC2
Then not to dare to see when thy low voiceE2
Faltering would break its syllables to keepF2
My own full tuned hold passion in a leashG2
And not leap forth and fall about thy neckH2
And on thy bosom deep desired reliefI2
Rain out the heavy mist of tears that weigh'dJ2
Upon my brain my senses and my soulK2
For love himself took part against himselfF
To warn us off and Duty loved of LoveR
O this world's curse beloved but hated cameL2
Like Death betwixt thy dear embrace and mineC2
And crying Who is this behold thy brideM2
She push'd me from theeB2
If the sense is hardN2
To alien ears I did not speak to theseO2
No not to thee but to thyself in meB2
Hard is my doom and thine thou knowest it allM
Could Love part thus was it not well to speakP2
To have spoken once It could not but be wellD2
The slow sweet hours that bring us all things goodX
The slow sad hours that bring us all things illQ2
And all good things from evil brought the nightZ
In which we sat together and aloneK
And to the want that hollow'd all the heartN
Gave utterance by the yearning of an eyeR2
That burn'd upon its object thro' such tearsS2
As flow but once a lifeL
The trance gave wayT2
To those caresses when a hundred timesU2
In that last kiss which never was the lastV2
Farewell like endless welcome lived and diedM2
Then follow'd counsel comfort and the wordsW2
That make a man feel strong in speaking truthX2
Till now the dark was worn and overheadY2
The lights of sunset and of sunrise mix'dZ2
In that brief night the summer night that pausedA3
Among her stars to hear us stars that hungB3
Love charm'd to listen all the wheels of TimeD
Spun round in station but the end had comeJ
O then like those who clench their nerves to rushC3
Upon their dissolution we two roseD3
There closing like an individual lifeL
In one blind cry of passion and of painE3
Like bitter accusation ev'n to deathF3
Caught up the whole of love and utter'd itG3
And bade adieu for everH3
Live yet liveI3
Shall sharpest pathos blight us knowing allM
Life needs for life is possible to willQ2
Live happy tend thy flowers be tended byR2
My blessing Should my Shadow cross thy thoughtsJ3
Too sadly for their peace remand it thouS
For calmer hours to Memory's darkest holdK3
If not to be forgotten not at onceL3
Not all forgotten Should it cross thy dreamsM3
O might it come like one that looks contentN3
With quiet eyes unfaithful to the truthX2
And point thee forward to a distant lightZ
Or seem to lift a burthen from thy heartN
And leave thee fre r till thou wake refresh'dO3
Then when the first low matin chirp hath grownK
Full quire and morning driv'n her plow of pearlP3
Far furrowing into light the mounded rackQ3
Beyond the fair green field and eastern seaB2
