One writes that Other friends remainA
That Loss is common to the raceB
And common is the commonplaceB
And vacant chaff well meant for grainA
That loss is common would not makeC
My own less bitter rather moreD
Too common Never morning woreD
To evening but some heart did breakC
O father wheresoe'er thou beE
Who pledgest now thy gallant sonF
A shot ere half thy draught be doneF
Hath still'd the life that beat from theeE
-
O mother praying God will saveG
Thy sailor while thy head is bow'dH
His heavy shotted hammock shroudH
Drops in his vast and wandering graveG
-
Ye know no more than I who wroughtI
At that last hour to please him wellJ
Who mused on all I had to tellJ
And something written something thoughtI
-
Expecting still his advent homeK
And ever met him on his wayL
With wishes thinking here to dayL
Or here to morrow will he comeM
-
O somewhere meek unconscious doveN
That sitteth ranging golden hairO
And glad to find thyself so fairO
Poor child that waiteth for thy loveN
-
For now her father's chimney glowsP
In expectation of a guestQ
And thinking this will please him bestQ
She takes a riband or a roseP
-
For he will see them on to nightR
And with the thought her colour burnsS
And having left the glass she turnsS
Once more to set a ringlet rightR
-
And even when she turn'd the curseT
Had fallen and her future LordU
Was drown'd in passing thro' the fordU
Or kill'd in falling from his horseV
-
O what to her shall be the endW
And what to me remains of goodX
To her perpetual maidenhoodX
And unto me no second friendX
