DedicationA
These to His Memory since he held them dearB
Perchance as finding there unconsciouslyC
Some image of himself I dedicateD
I dedicate I consecrate with tearsE
These IdyllsE
-
And indeed He seems to meC
Scarce other than my king's ideal knightF
Who reverenced his conscience as his kingG
Whose glory was redressing human wrongH
Who spake no slander no nor listened to itI
Who loved one only and who clave to her '-
Her over all whose realms to their last isleJ
Commingled with the gloom of imminent warK
The shadow of His loss drew like eclipseE
Darkening the world We have lost him he is goneL
We know him now all narrow jealousiesE
Are silent and we see him as he movedM
How modest kindly all accomplished wiseE
With what sublime repression of himselfN
And in what limits and how tenderlyC
Not swaying to this faction or to thatO
Not making his high place the lawless perchP
Of winged ambitions nor a vantage groundQ
For pleasure but through all this tract of yearsE
Wearing the white flower of a blameless lifeR
Before a thousand peering littlenessesE
In that fierce light which beats upon a throneS
And blackens every blot for where is heC
Who dares foreshadow for an only sonA
A lovelier life a more unstained than hisE
Or how should England dreaming of HIS sonsE
Hope more for these than some inheritanceE
Of such a life a heart a mind as thineT
Thou noble Father of her Kings to beC
Laborious for her people and her poorU
Voice in the rich dawn of an ampler dayV
Far sighted summoner of War and WasteW
To fruitful strifes and rivalries of peaceE
Sweet nature gilded by the gracious gleamX
Of letters dear to Science dear to ArtY
Dear to thy land and ours a Prince indeedZ
Beyond all titles and a household nameA2
Hereafter through all times Albert the GoodB2
-
Break not O woman's heart but still endureC2
Break not for thou art Royal but endureC2
Remembering all the beauty of that starD2
Which shone so close beside Thee that ye madeE2
One light together but has past and leavesE
The Crown a lonely splendourD2
-
May all loveF2
His love unseen but felt o'ershadow TheeC
The love of all Thy sons encompass TheeC
The love of all Thy daughters cherish TheeC
The love of all Thy people comfort TheeC
Till God's love set Thee at his side againG2
