Come into the garden MaudA
For the black bat Night has flownB
Come into the garden MaudA
I am here at the gate aloneB
And the woodbine spices are wafted abroadA
And the musk of the roses blownB
-
For a breeze of morning movesC
And the planet of Love is on highD
Beginning to faint in the light that she lovesE
On a bed of daffodil skyD
To faint in the light of the sun she lovesE
To faint in his light and to dieD
-
All night have the roses heardF
The flute violin bassoonG
All night has the casement jessamine stirr'dF
To the dancers dancing in tuneG
Till a silence fell with the waking birdF
And a hush with the setting moonG
-
I said to the lily There is but oneH
With whom she has heart to be gayI
When will the dancers leave her aloneB
She is weary of dance and playI
Now half to the setting moon are goneJ
And half to the rising dayI
Low on the sand and loud on the stoneB
The last wheel echoes awayI
-
I said to the rose The brief night goesK
In babble and revel and wineL
O young lordlover what sighs are thoseK
For one that will never be thineL
But mine but mine so I sware to the roseK
For ever and ever mineL
-
And the soul of the rose went into my bloodM
As the music clash'd in the hallN
And long by the garden lake I stoodO
For I heard your rivulet fallN
From the lake to the meadow and on to the woodO
Our wood that is dearer than allN
-
From the meadow your walks have left so sweetP
That whenever a March wind sighsQ
He sets the jewelprint of your feetP
In violets blue as your eyesQ
To the woody hollows in which we meetP
And the valleys of ParadiseR
-
The slender acacia would not shakeS
One long milk bloom on the treeT
The white lake blossom fell into the lakeS
As the pimpernel dozed on the leaT
But the rose was awake all night for your sakeS
Knowing your promise to meT
The lilies and roses were all awakeS
They sigh'd for the dawn and theeT
-
Queen rose of the rosebud garden of girlsU
Come hither the dances are doneH
In gloss of satin and glimmer of pearlsU
Queen lily and rose in oneH
Shine out little head sunning over with curlsU
To the flowers and be their sunH
-
There has fallen a splendid tearV
From the passion flower at the gateW
She is coming my dove my dearX
She is coming my life my fateW
The red rose cries She is near she is nearX
And the white rose weeps She is lateW
The larkspur listens I hear I hearY
And the lily whispers I waitW
-
She is coming my own my sweetP
Were it ever so airy a treadZ
My heart would hear her and beatP
Were it earth in an earthy bedZ
My dust would hear her and beatP
Had I lain for a century deadZ
Would start and tremble under her feetP
And blossom in purple and redZ
