I 'listed at home for a lancerA
Oh who would not sleep with the braveB
I 'listed at home for a lancerA
To ride on a horse to my graveB
-
And over the seas we were biddenC
A country to take and to keepD
And far with the brave I have riddenE
And now with the brave I shall sleepD
-
For round me the men will be lyingF
That learned me the way to behaveB
And showed me my business of dyingF
Oh who would not sleep with the braveB
-
They ask and there is not an answerA
Says I I will 'list for a lancerA
Oh who would not sleep with the braveB
-
And I with the brave shall be sleepingF
At ease on my mattress of loamG
When back from their taking and keepingF
The squadron is riding at homeG
-
The wind with the plumes will be playingF
The girls will stand watching them waveB
And eyeing my comrades and sayingF
Oh who would not sleep with the braveB
-
They ask and there is not an answerA
Says you I will 'list for a lancerA
Oh who would not sleep with the braveB
