Beyond the moor and the mountain crestA
Comrade look not on the westA
The sun is down and drinks awayB
From air and land the lees of dayB
-
The long cloud and the single pineC
Sentinel the ending lineC
And out beyond it clear and wanD
Reach the gulfs of evening onD
-
The son of woman turns his browE
West from forty countries nowE
And as the edge of heaven he eyesF
Thinks eternal thoughts and sighsF
-
Oh wide's the world to rest or roamG
With change abroad and cheer at homeG
Fights and furloughs talk and taleH
Company and beef and aleH
-
But if I front the evening skyI
Silent on the west look II
And my comrade stride for strideJ
Paces silent at my sideJ
-
Comrade look not on the westA
'Twill have the heart out of your breastA
'Twill take your thoughts and sink them farK
Leagues beyond the sunset barK
-
Oh lad I fear that yon's the seaL
Where they fished for you and meL
And there from whence we both were ta'enM
You and I shall drown againM
-
Send not on your soul beforeN
To dive from that beguiling shoreN
And let not yet the swimmer leaveO
His clothes upon the sands of eveO
-
Too fast to yonder strand forlornP
We journey to the sunken bournP
To flush the fading tinges eyedJ
By other lads at eventideJ
-
Wide is the world to rest or roamG
And early 'tis for turning homeG
Plant your heel on earth and standJ
And let's forget our native landJ
-
When you and I are split on airQ
Long we shall be strangers thereQ
Friends of flesh and bone are bestJ
Comrade look not on the westJ
