The Welsh Marches Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFG HHII JJKK LLBB BBBB BBMM BBNN

High the vanes of Shrewsbury gleamA
Islanded in Severn streamA
The bridges from the steepled crestB
Cross the water east and westB
-
The flag of morn in conqueror's stateC
Enters at the English gateC
The vanquished eve as night prevailsD
Bleeds upon the road to WalesD
-
Ages since the vanquished bledE
Round my mother's marriage bedE
There the ravens feasted farF
About the open house of warG
-
When Severn down to Buildwas ranH
Coloured with the death of manH
Couched upon her brother's graveI
That Saxon got me on the slaveI
-
The sound of fight is silent longJ
That began the ancient wrongJ
Long the voice of tears is stillK
That wept of old the endless illK
-
In my heart it has not diedL
The war that sleeps on Severn sideL
They cease not fighting east and westB
On the marches of my breatB
-
Here the truceless armies yetB
Trample rolled in blood and sweatB
They kill and kill and never dieB
And I think that each is IB
-
None will part us none undoB
The knot that makes one flesh of twoB
Sick with hatred sick with painM
Strangling When shall we be slainM
-
When shall I be dead and ridB
Of the wrong my father didB
How long how long till spade and hearseN
Puts to sleep my mother's curseN
