On Moonlit Heath And Lonesome Bank Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MNMN COCO

On moonlit heath and lonesome bankA
The sheep beside me grazeB
And yon the gallows used to clankA
Fast by the four cross waysB
-
A careless shepherd once would keepC
The flocks by moonlight thereD
And high amongst the glimmering sheepC
The dead man stood on airD
-
They hang us now in Shrewsbury jailE
The whistles blow forlornF
And trains all night groan on the railE
To men that die at mornF
-
There sleeps in Shrewsbury jail to nightG
Or wakes as may betideH
A better lad if things went rightG
Than most that sleep outsideH
-
And naked to the hangman's nooseI
The morning clocks will ringJ
A neck God made for other useI
Than strangling in a stringJ
-
And sharp the link of life will snapK
And dead on air will standL
Heels that held up as straight a chapK
As treads upon the landL
-
So here I'll watch the night and waitM
To see the morning shineN
When he will hear the stroke of eightM
And not the stroke of nineN
-
And wish my friend as sound a sleepC
As lads' I did not knowO
That shepherded the moonlit sheepC
A hundred years agoO
