Illic Jacet Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH

Oh hard is the bed they have made himA
And common the blanket and cheapB
But there he will lie as they laid himA
Where else could you trust him to sleepB
-
To sleep when the bugle is cryingC
And cravens have heard and are braveD
When mothers and sweethearts are sighingC
And lads are in love with the graveD
-
Oh dark is the chamber and lonelyE
And lights and companions departF
But lief will he lose them and onlyE
Behold the desire of his heartF
-
And low is the roof but it coversG
A sleeper content to reposeH
And far from his friends and his loversG
He lies with the sweetheart he choseH
