When I am gone I pray you shedA
No tears upon the grassy bedA
Where that which you have loved is laidB
Under the wind warped yew tree's shadeB
And let no sombre pomp prepareC
My unreturning journey thereC
Nor wailing words nor dirges deepD
Disturb the quiet of my sleepD
But tender maidens robed in whiteE
Who have not yet forgotten quiteE
The love I sought the love I gaveF
Be the sole mourners round my graveF
And neither then nor after raiseG
The bust of pride the slab of praiseG
To him who having sinned and strivenH
Now only asks to be forgivenH
That he is goneI
-
When I am gone you must not deemJ
That I am severed as I seemJ
From all that still enchains you hereK
Throughout the long revolving yearL
When as to Winter's barren shoreM
The tides of Spring return once moreM
And wakened by their flashing showersN
The woodland foams afresh with flowersN
You sally forth and ramble wideO
I shall walk silent at your sideO
Shall watch your mirth shall catch your smileP
Shall wander with you all the whileP
And as in many a bygone SpringQ
Hear cuckoo call and ousel singQ
And when you homeward wend alongR
A land all blithe with bleat and songR
Where lambs that skip and larks that soarM
Make this old world seem young once moreM
And with the wildwood flowers that fillS
Your April laps deck shelf and sillS
I shall be there to guide your handT
And you will surely understandT
I am not goneI
-
When Summer leans on Autumn's armU
And warm round grange and red roofed farmU
Is piled the wain and thatched the stackV
And swallows troop and fieldfares packV
When round rough trunk and knotted rootW
Lies thick the freshly fallen fruitW
And 'mong the orchard aisles you museX
On what we gain on what we loseX
Now vernal cares no more annoyY
And wisdom takes the place of joyY
I shall be there as in past yearsZ
To share your steps to dry your tearsA2
To note how Autumn days have broughtB2
Feelings mature and mellow thoughtB2
The fruitful grief for others' smartC2
The ripeness of a human heartC2
And when the winds wax rude and loudD2
And Winter weaves the stark year's shroudD2
As round the flickering household blazeG
You sit and talk of vanished daysG
Of parent friend no longer nighE2
And loves that in the churchyard lieE2
And lips grow weak and lids grow wetF2
Then then I shall be with you yetF2
Though I seem goneI
