The lark went up the mower whet his scytheA
On golden meads kine ruminating layB
And all the world felt young again and blitheC
Just as to dayB
-
The partridge shook her covey from her wingsD
And limped along the grass on leaf and lawnE
Shimmered the dew and every throat that singsD
Chanted the dawnE
-
The doe was followed by her new dropped fawnE
And folding all her feathers on her breastF
The swan within the reedmace deep withdrawnE
Dreamed on her nestF
-
In the green wheat the poppy burst aflameG
Wildrose and woodbine garlanded the gladeH
And twin with maiden Summer forth there cameG
A summer MaidH
-
Her face was as the face of mid June whenI
Blossoms the meadowsweet the bindweed blowsJ
Pale as a lily first She blenched and thenI
Blushed like a roseJ
-
They placed a Crown upon her fair young browK
They put a Sceptre in her girlish handL
Saying Behold You are Sovereign Lady nowK
Of this great Land ''-
-
Silent She gazed as one who doth not knowM
The meaning of a message When She brokeN
The hush of awe around her 'twas as thoughM
Her soul that spokeN
-
With this dread summons since 'tis Heaven's decreeO
I would not palter even if I couldP
But being a woman only I can beO
Not great but goodP
-
I cannot don the breastplate and the helmQ
To my weak waist the sword I cannot girdR
Nor in the discords that distract a RealmQ
Be seen or heardR
-
But in my People's wisdom will I shareS
And in their valour play a helpful partT
Lending them still in all they do or dareS
My woman's heartT
-
And haply it may be that by God's graceU
And unarmed Love's invulnerable mightV
I may though woman lead a manly raceU
To higher heightV
-
If wise will curb disorderly desireW
The Present hold the parent Past in aweX
Religion hallowing with its sacred fireW
Freedom and LawY
-
Never be broken long as I shall reignZ
The solemn covenant 'twixt them and meO
To keep this Kingdom moated by the mainZ
Loyal yet free ''-
-
Thus with grave utterance and majestic mienA2
She with her eighteen summers filled the ThroneB2
Where Alfred sate a girl withal a QueenA2
Aloft aloneB2
-
But Love that hath the power to force apartT
The bolts and baulk the sentinels of KingsD
Came o'er the sea and in her April heartT
Folded his wingsD
-
Thenceforth more dear than diadem She ownedC2
A princely helpmate sharer in her trustD2
If not her Sceptre since withal enthronedD2
By Time the justD2
-
Scorner of wrong and lover of the rightD2
Compounded all of nobleness he seemedD2
And was indeed the perfect gentle KnightD2
The poet dreamedD2
-
So when the storm of wrath arose that draveE2
Scared Rulers from their realms Her Throne deep laidD2
In liberty and trust calm shelter gaveE2
To Kings dismayedD2
-
And stronger grew the bond of love and graceU
Betwixt Her and her People while that SheO
Reigned the glad Mother of a Royal raceU
Rulers to beO
-
But Death that deepens love in darkening lifeE2
Turned to a pall the purple of her ThroneB2
Then more than once the maid the widowed wifeE2
Reigned all aloneB2
-
Leave me awhile to linger with the dead ''-
Weeping She sued But doubt not that I stillF2
Am nuptialled to my People and have wedD2
Their deathless willF2
-
Their thoughts shall be my thoughts their aim my aimG
Their free lent loyalty my right divineG2
Mine will I make their triumphs mine their fameG
Their sorrows mineG2
-
And I will be the bond to link them allH2
In patriot purpose till my days be doneI2
So that in mind and might whate'er befallH2
They still keep One ''-
-
Then to the winds yet wider was unfurledD2
The Flag that tyrants never could enslaveE2
Till its strong wisdom governed half the worldD2
And all the waveE2
-
And panoplied alike for War or PeaceJ2
Victoria's England furroweth still the foamK2
To harvest Empire wiser than was GreeceJ2
Wider than RomeK2
-
Therefore with glowing hearts and proud glad tearsL2
The children of her Island Realm to dayD2
Recall her sixty venerable yearsM2
Of virtuous swayD2
-
Now too from where Saint Lawrence winds adownI2
'Twixt forests felled and plains that feel the ploughE2
And Ganges jewels the Imperial CrownI2
That girds her browE2
-
From Afric's Cape where loyal watchdogs barkN2
And Britain's Sceptre ne'er shall be withdrawnI2
And that young Continent that greets the darkN2
When we the dawnI2
-
From steel capped promontories stern and strongO2
And lone isles mounting guard upon the mainI2
Hither her subjects wend to hail her longO2
Resplendent ReignI2
-
And ever when mid June's musk roses blowM
Our Race will celebrate Victoria's nameG
And even England's greatness gain a glowM
From Her pure fameG
