The Lark Confinèd In His Cage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

The lark confin d in his cageA
And captive in his wingB
Though fluttering with imprisoned rageA
Forbeareth not to singB
-
But still the strain though loud and longC
Is but the mock of mirthD
Not that dawn dewy nuptial songC
That weddeth Heaven with EarthD
-
Voice that in freedom seems so softE
Fettered sounds harsh and roughF
Listen He shrilleth far too oftG
Nor faltereth half enoughF
-
And I still feebler it not freeH
Do hourly more and moreI
Grow silent in captivityH
And if I sing must soarI
-
And as the lark's free carol floatsJ
High on a sea of soundK
So let me fling my random notesJ
To ripple round and roundK
-
Hark now he shakes the towering skiesL
A carillon of lightM
Then dwindleth to a faint surmiseL
Still singing out of sightM
-
And though in clearest light arrayedN
The Poet's song should shineO
Sometimes his far off voice will fadeN
Into the dim divineO
-
Then we with following ear and heartP
Should listen to the endQ
Though we descry may but in partP
And dimly apprehendQ
-
Lo soon he quits his heavenly questR
Slow carolling into sightM
Then quavering downward strikes his nestR
Earthward aeroliteR
-
So doubt not dear that if I soarI
Where none longwhile may dwellS
Though Heaven at times may be my homeT
Home is my Heaven as wellS
