Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCCE FGFGDHDDH HIHIJKJJK LHLHMNMMN OPOPEIDEI

By the fates that have fastened our lifeA
By the distance that holds us apartB
By our passion its sweetness its strifeA
By the longing and ache of the heartB
By our meeting our parting our painC
When meeting and parting are o'erD
Take me hence to where once I have lainC
Ere I die of despair and disdainC
I imploreE
-
'Tis in vain that you bid me be calmF
Can we bridle our pulses at willG
Is fasting for hunger a balmF
Can emptiness emptiness fillG
Shall I wait till I shrivel with fireD
Till I perish of parching and thirstH
Shall I make of my passion a pyreD
And martyred by drouth and desireD
Die accursedH
-
I appeal to the hills which beheldH
The dawning the day of our loveI
To the moon when our bosoms first swelledH
With its birth that watched fondly aboveI
To the city surpassingly fairJ
To the revel the rapture divineK
That flooded the earth and the airJ
When our mutinous secret lay bareJ
Am I thineK
-
Will you leave me to faint and to fallL
Plunge me back in the slough of despondH
Shall I be to earth's darkness a thrallL
When I see a whole heaven beyondH
Shall you who might waken my shellM
Consign it to silence and shameN
And just as the notes 'gin to swellM
With your hands smite the chords and dispelM
All its fameN
-
Be this at your bidding our doomO
Together then break we our chainsP
There is hope there is rest in the tombO
When in life nought but anguish remainsP
If love be but one torment moreE
Oh come then the gulf or the glaiveI
Let us live our delirium once o'erD
Just once then the comfort exploreE
Of the graveI
