Beatrice Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABAABBCDCDC EFEEFFGHGHG EIEEIIEJEJE EKEEKKCLCLCShe came into the April air | A |
And passed across the silvery lawn | B |
Blithe was her voice her brow was bare | A |
And rippled from her radiant hair | A |
The glow and glory of the dawn | B |
Her footfall scared nor doe nor fawn | B |
No timid songster ceased to sing | C |
But wheresoe'er she strayed or stood | D |
Her maiden coming seemed to bring | C |
A wider wonder to the wood | D |
And more of magic to the Spring | C |
- | |
When June is throned and round her blows | E |
The rambling briar and lily tall | F |
I saw her watch the buds unclose | E |
Herself herself the loveliest rose | E |
And stateliest lily of them all | F |
The blackbirds' fluting cuckoo's call | F |
She scarcely heard for trembled near | G |
And thrilled her wheresoe'er she strayed | H |
That note more deep that voice more dear | G |
That lures to love the listening maid | H |
When half is fondness half is fear | G |
- | |
Among the rows of ripened sheaves | E |
And orchard harvests golden red | I |
The tapestry that Autumn weaves | E |
From fallen fruit and fading leaves | E |
Pensive she paced with matron tread | I |
Low was her voice but all she said | I |
Seemed strangely true and deeply wise | E |
And mute her offspring gathered round | J |
To gaze into her tranquil eyes | E |
And listen to the sacred sound | J |
Of mellow words and meek replies | E |
- | |
Now by the wintry hearth she sits | E |
Grey guardian of the household fire | K |
Foretells the Future as she knits | E |
Then back her loving memory flits | E |
To bygone days and dead desire | K |
Anon her fingers seem to tire | K |
And weary sense to droop its wing | C |
But though her gaze hath feebler grown | L |
Nor knows she what the children sing | C |
She sees the Lamb before the Throne | L |
And hears the Angels canticling | C |
