Now Winter hath driftedA
To bygone yearsB
And the sod is upliftedC
By crocus spearsB
And out of the hive the bee wings hummingD
And we know that the Spring the Spring is comingD
-
For the snow hath meltedA
From sunless cleftE
And the clouds that peltedC
Slant sleet have leftE
The sky as blue as a child's gaze afterF
Its tears have vanished and veered to laughterF
-
See light is gleamingD
In primrose brakesG
And out of its dreamingD
The speedwell wakesG
And the tender tips of the timid cloverF
Peep forth to see if the frost be overF
-
The celandine gazesH
Straight at the sunI
The starlike daisiesJ
Peer one by oneI
And over the pool where the sallow glistensJ
The daffodil hangs its head and listensJ
-
At first but singleK
And then in flocksJ
In dell and dingleK
The lady smocksJ
Make mist for the golden cowslip tapersJ
To shine like sunrise through morning vapoursJ
-
In fat ribbed fallowsJ
The lapwings nestL
And the home coming swallowsJ
Seek out where bestL
They may build with a love that is sure and stableK
Their cosy cribs under last year's gableK
-
The blackcaps trebleK
A strain as sweetM
As stream o'er pebbleK
Or wind through wheatM
While like flickering light the kinglet hoversJ
Round woodbined haven of hiding loversJ
-
The lark chants soaringD
From moist brown heathN
'Twixt Heaven's high flooringD
And earth beneathN
Like a true wise poet in wavering weatherF
A carol to link the twain togetherF
-
The cuckoo flauntingD
O'er glen and gladeO
Flies loudly vauntingD
New loves betrayedO
Till we all of us echo the madcap sayingD
And laugh and joyously wend a'mayingD
-
Then in mask and tabardO
The mummer tripsJ
And out of its scabbardO
The iris slipsJ
And calls to the lily and rose Why tarryP
Now the nightingale under the silence starryP
-
Keeps trilling trillingD
Its nest aboveQ
The descant thrillingD
Of straining loveQ
That yearneth for more more more till gladnessJ
Still winged with wanting seems one with sadness ''-
-
But once the rosesJ
And lilies blowR
Our wilding posiesJ
Follow the snowR
And turning to greet the fair new comerF
We find the face of the fearless SummerF
-
But though sultry shimmerF
And panting heatO
Lure senses dimmerF
To deem them sweetO
Who would not exchange their passionate thunderF
For May's moist blushes of maiden wonderF
-
But Winter hath driftedO
To bygone yearsJ
And the sod is upliftedO
By crocus spearsJ
And out of the hive the bee wings hummingD
And we know that the Spring is coming comingD
