Now let me praise the LordA
The Lord the Maker of allB
I will praise Him on timbrel and chordA
Will praise Him whatever befallB
-
For the Heavens are His and the EarthC
His are the wind and the waveD
His the begetting the birthC
And His the jaws of the graveD
-
'Tis He that hath made us not weE
We were dust and slime of the groundF
He breathed on the dark and we seeE
He flooded the silence with soundF
-
Shall I pick and choose for His praiseG
Shall I thank Him for good not illH
He is the Ancient of DaysG
And He hews the rocks as He willH
-
So I praise Thee O Lord for the goodI
For the ill for the weal for the woeJ
For the cushat that coos in the woodI
And the wolves that howl in the snowJ
-
For the close fitting doors that are barredK
Lest the vagrant should whine for breadL
And the yawn of the slinking pardL
That hath gorged and surfeitedL
-
For the owl that jibbers and blinksM
In the arches the Flavian plannedL
And the stare of the stony SphynxM
O'er the ribs of the fleshless sandL
-
What is there Thou hast doneN
I will not thank for and praiseM
Thanks for the sands that are runN
Thanks for the unborn daysM
-
For the stealthy mildew and blightL
That shows on the mellowing cornO
And the bankrupt that wakes at nightL
And weeps o'er the day he was bornO
-
For the fears and the years that are nullP
And the hopes Thou dost bring to noughtL
And the worm thridden ways of the skullP
In which Shakespeare thoughtL
-
How shall I thank Thee O LordL
For Thy infinite ways and deedsM
For the edge of the cleaving swordL
And the neigh of riderless steedsM
-
The murderous glitter and trampQ
And the lives that are mown like grainR
The cheers of the victors' campQ
And the clammy sleep of the slainR
-
The laurels and loves that awaitL
The Hero returned from the strifeS
And the widows that stand at the gateL
Loveless and lonely for lifeS
-
Thanks for all things that areT
For the fair the foul the fellU
Thanks for the Morning starT
And the nethermost murk of HellU
-
For the music of moonlight nightsM
And the savour of summer daysM
For the swoop of carrion kitesM
And the stench of gibbeted jaysM
-
The soft ripples that laugh in the bayV
The soft shadows that sweep o'er the moorW
And the plunge of the tides at their preyV
When they level the homes of the poorX
-
Lift up your throats ye wavesM
Swell out your voice ye hillsM
Thank for the chance that savesM
Thank for the flash that killsM
-
For the bliss of a dewy dellU
When lover and maiden meetL
And the venal kisses they sellU
In the shade of the lamp lit streetL
-
For the tumult of hopes and fearsM
When the bridegroom steals to his brideL
And the coldness born of the yearsM
Though they still lie side by sideL
-
Praise we praise we the LordL
The Lord the Maker of allB
Praise Him on timbrel and chordL
Praise Him whatever befallB
