Lady in this night of JuneA
Fair like thee and holyB
Art thou gazing at the moonA
That is rising slowlyB
I am gazing on her nowC
Something tells me so art thouC
-
Night hath been when thou and ID
Side by side were sittingE
Watching o'er the moonlit skyD
Fleecy cloudlets flittingE
Close our hands were link d thenF
When will they be linked againF
-
What to me the starlight stillG
Or the moonbeams' splendourH
If I do not feel the thrillG
Of thy fingers slenderH
Summer nights in vain are clearH
If thy footstep be not nearH
-
Roses slumbering in their sheathsI
O'er my threshold clamberH
And the honeysuckle wreathesI
Its translucent amberH
Round the gables of my homeJ
How is it thou dost not comeK
-
If thou camest rose on roseI
From its sleep would wakenL
From each flower and leaf that blowsI
Spices would be shakenL
Floating down from star and treeH
Dreamy perfumes welcome theeH
-
I would lead thee where the leavesI
In the moon rays glistenL
And where shadows fall in sheavesI
We would lean and listenL
For the song of that sweet birdM
That in April nights is heardM
-
And when weary lids would closeI
And thy head was droopingE
Then like dew that steeps the roseI
O'er thy languor stoopingE
I would till I woke a sighD
Kiss thy sweet lips silentlyH
-
I would give thee all I ownN
All thou hast would borrowH
I from thee would keep aloneN
Fear and doubt and sorrowH
All of tender that is mineO
Should most tenderly be thineO
-
Moonlight into other skiesI
I beseech thee wanderH
Cruel thus to mock mine eyesI
Idle thus to squanderH
Love's own light on this dark spotP
For my lady cometh notP
