In lakeside leafy groves a friarA
Escaped all worries there he passedB
His summer days in constant prayerC
Deep studies and eternal fastB
Already with a humble shovelD
The elder dug himself a graveE
As calling saints to bless his hovelD
Death nothing other did he craveE
-
So once upon a falling night heF
Was bowing by his wilted shackG
With meekest prayer to the AlmightyF
The grove was turning slowly blackG
Above the lake a mist was liftingH
Through milky clouds across the skyI
The ruddy moon was softly driftingH
When water drew the friar's eyeI
-
He's looking puzzled full of troubleD
Of fear he cannot quite explainJ
He sees the waves begin to bubbleD
And suddenly grow calm againK
Then white as first snow in the highlandsL
Light footed as nocturnal shadeM
There comes ashore and sits in silenceN
Upon the bank a naked maidM
-
She eyes the monk and brushes gentlyF
Her hair and water off her armsO
He shakes with fear and looks intentlyF
At her and at her lovely charmsO
With eager hand she waves and beckonsP
Nods quickly smiles as from afarQ
And shoots within two flashing secondsL
Into still water like a starQ
-
The glum old man slept not an instantR
All day not even once he prayedM
Before his eyes still hung and glistenedS
The wondrous the relentless shadeM
The grove puts on its gown of nightfallT
The moon walks on the cloudy floorU
And there's the maiden pale delightfulD
Reclining on the spellbound shoreU
-
She looks at him her hair she brushesV
Blows airy kisses gestures wildW
Plays with the waves caresses splashesX
Now laughs now whimpers like a childW
Moans tenderly calls louder louderA
'Come monk come monk To me to me '-
Then disappears in limpid waterA
And all is silent instantlyF
-
On the third day the zealous hermitY
Was sitting by the shore in loveZ
Awaiting the delightful mermaidM
As shade was covering the groveA2
Dark ceded to the sun's emergenceN
Our monk had wholly disappearedB2
Before a crowd of local urchinsP
While fishing found his hoary beardB2
