The Upas Tree Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDDD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL DMDM DDDD NONO

Deep in the desert's miseryA
far in the fury of the sandB
there stands the awesome Upas TreeA
lone watchman of a lifeless landB
-
The wilderness a world of thirstC
in wrath engendered it and filledD
its every root every accursedD
grey leafstalk with a sap that killedD
-
Dissolving in the midday sunE
the poison oozes through its barkF
and freezing when the day is doneE
gleams thick and gem like in the darkF
-
No bird flies near no tiger creepsG
alone the whirlwind wild and blackH
assails the tree of death and sweepsG
away with death upon its backH
-
And though some roving cloud may stainI
with glancing drops those leaden leavesJ
the dripping of a poisoned rainI
is all the burning sand receivesJ
-
But man sent man with one proud lookK
towards the tree and he was goneL
the humble one and there he tookK
the poison and returned at dawnL
-
He brought the deadly gum with itD
he brought some leaves a withered boughM
while rivulets of icy sweatD
ran slowly down his livid browM
-
He came he fell upon a matD
and reaping a poor slave's rewardD
died near the painted hut where satD
his now unconquerable lordD
-
The king he soaked his arrows trueN
in poison and beyond the plainsO
dispatched those messengers and slewN
his neighbors in their own domainsO
